Special Educator

Special education, also known as special needs education, is the practice of educating children who differ socially, mentally, or physically from the average population, addressing their disabilities and special needs. Children are not objects to be shaped, but rather individuals to be developed. A special educator recognises this and strives to impart knowledge in ways that are enjoyable and convenient for the child. They offer assistance and create individualised educational plans unique to each child. Parents play an important role on the team; they, along with the special educator, monitor their child’s progress and work to promote easy learning at home. A special educator’s job also entails coordinating with others involved in the child’s well-being, such as social workers, school psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, school administrators, and other teachers, in addition to the child and parents. Children with special needs should be enrolled in special education as soon as they are eligible because the special educator is at the centre of the multidisciplinary team concerned with child development.
